Exploring undergraduate nursing students’ perceptions of using a learning management system: A systematic review
Abstract
Background: The technology revolution led to the introduction of learning modules via learning management systems (LMSs) in education institutions. Evidence shows the effectiveness of LMSs depends on their use by instructors and students. Few studies have assessed the perspectives of undergraduate nursing students on LMS. Therefore, this systemic review aims to explore students’ perceptions of a study module delivered via an LMS. It will also identify factors influencing students’ perceptions about LMS. Method: A systematic review was employed to answer the research question. Five electronic databases were searched, including CINHAL PLUS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE, and Cochrane. Eligible studies were those conducted between 2010 and 2022. All the selected studies meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were critically appraised according to the study designs using a structured checklist Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP), Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust (MKPCT) tools, Mixed Method Appraising Tool (MMAT), Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Results: 17 primary studies were included from across the world (four mixed studies, two qualitative, five surveys, two cross-sectional studies, one RCT, one observational, one case study, and one quasi-experimental). The findings suggested the characteristics of students’, instructors, and LMSs had a significant influence on students’ acceptance and positive perceptions. Conclusion: Students’ perceptions toward LMS were found to relate to acceptance of LMS, determined in relation to a technology acceptance model (TAM). Students’ reports of perceived usefulness and ease of use had a significant impact on their acceptance, usage, and positive perceptions. Indeed, students’ characteristics, instructors’ roles, and the features of the LMS had a positive impact on students’ acceptance and perceptions toward LMS. Subsequently, it is recommended to consider the factors influencing students’ perceptions when designing an LMS module to guarantee a successful learning experience.Published
