Empowering and Enhancing Knowledge of Community Health Workers leveraging Technology: The Dishari Initiative by BRAC
Abstract
Introduction: BRAC, a Bangladesh based non-governmental organization (NGO), deploys one of the world’s largest networks of community health workers (CHW). Armed with android tablet, these all-female cadre regularly reaches the doorsteps of 58 million people with essential health services and education. CHW interventions are contributing to a decline in early marriage, child mortality, neonatal deaths, and increases in family planning and diabetes self-management. Through Dishari, an android-based learning platform developed in-house, BRAC is ensuring continuous learning for its CHWs. Methodology: The Dishari platform was initially piloted in May 2020 for BRAC’s first community-based Covid-19 response project and later mainstreamed into the health program. Presently, 3,685 CHWs across 51 districts in Bangladesh receive training through Dishari. In 2022, around 4,000 CHWs underwent training across six modules and subsequently underwent knowledge assessments. Results: The Dishari initiative has enabled continuous capacity building for CHWs, offering upskilling opportunities. It is not only boosting digital literacy and upskilling opportunities among them but also supporting increased levels of health education among marginalized groups and empowerment of women and girls. Conclusion: The Dishari initiative by BRAC has revolutionized the way BRAC empowers CHWs to ensure effective dissemination of health education in communities. This innovative approach serves as a model for other non-governmental organizations seeking to empower frontline health workers for improved well-being of communities, especially in resource constrained settings.Published
