Scoping the prevalence of disability, multi-morbidity and chronic health conditions among community users of a digital mental health service
Abstract
Background: Chronic health conditions are increasing in prevalence worldwide. Complex relationships exist between chronic conditions, mental health and associated disability. This study aimed to scope the prevalence of chronic conditions and disability among users of a digital mental health service in the Australian community, and to explore related motivations to engage with a digital health service. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of Australian adults registered with the THISWAYUP (thiswayup.org.au) digital mental health service was conducted. Data on participant demography, chronic conditions, self-reported disability and help-seeking motivations were collected via mixed quantitative and qualitative survey fields. Results: 366 participants completed the survey (77% female, mean age 50±15 years). Over two thirds (71.6%, 242/338) reported at least one chronic health condition and one third reported multi-morbidity (112/338, 33.1%); with chronic pain, musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders most common. 26.9% of respondents (90/334) reported having a disability, most commonly physical disabilities. Digital programs for managing anxiety, depression, stress and chronic pain were most popular among users with chronic conditions/disabilities. The primary motivations for digital service use were receiving a recommendation from a health professional and service accessibility. 46% of participants reported heightened interest in digital mental health treatments specifically because of their condition/disability. Discussion: People who access digital mental health services in routine care report high rates of chronic disease and related disability. There appears to be an appetite for accessible digital treatments to support mental health and wellbeing at scale among people who live with chronic conditions and disabilities.Published
