Development of a mobile healthcare application with a high-resolution air quality forecast as an early warning system among patients with asthma
Abstract
Background: Air pollution can lead to poor asthma control. Existing mobile applications display indoor/outdoor air quality but none incorporate alerts for people with asthma. This study aimed to design, develop and test a mobile app with high-resolution air quality forecast and early warning system to reduce asthma morbidity. Methodology: The Agile Development Framework was used. A team of software developers, climate scientist and clinicians discussed the requirements. The app was developed in short sprints and tested internally. Seven cycles of alpha and beta testing were conducted with stakeholders, including patients with asthma. Usability testing was performed by 20 users using the SUS questionnaire. Results: The app has five major functionalities: 1. Registration: Gathers minimal user biodata and GINA asthma-control assessment questions. 2. Air-quality alert set-up: Users choose notification types and reminder timings. 3. Settings: Users can view app information, manage their account, and choose their preferred language. 4. Forecast: Displays forecast AQ data for the next 2 days, shown as a colour-coded gauge meter and prompts suitable actions. 5. Air Quality Map: Displays hour-by-hour forecast data for air pollution parameters on a map. The agile development approach facilitated expedient app development, resulting in interactive and user-friendly interfaces. Expected Impact: A mobile healthcare application with high-resolution air quality forecast is usable and has the potential to be an effective early warning system to improve asthma control.Published
