Abstract

The implementation of digital technology has revolutionised healthcare, necessitating innovative curriculum content in both medicine and dentistry. Digital dentistry has not only enhanced patient care but also transformed education.   This pilot project aimed to engage and challenge dental students through a Digital Dentistry Introduction hybrid learning module, meticulously designed by a panel of experts.   The hybrid course seamlessly integrated multimedia online modules with a dynamic, student-led micro-conference, addressing essential topics such as patient data management, cybersecurity, social media engagement and digital professionalism. A total of 236 first- and second-year students participated in the intervention, completing two online modules featuring video presentations, peer discussions, required readings, and quizzes. The learning modules also incorporated in-person teaching activities, including a pre-conference workshop, where students were required to participate in group work and developed a digital poster (DP) on the application of AI in dental health. The workshop day also culminated in an interactive, mini conference and an inciteful Q&A session.   The mini conference showcased 45 DP exploring AI's current and future roles in dental education and clinical practice, alongside the associated risks and benefits of implementation. Survey results indicated that students particularly valued learning about digital technologies in dentistry through engaging videos and peer discussions, while reading assignments were less favoured. Additionally, students acknowledged the challenges of AI adoption, including costs, the need for upskilling, and the burden of the transition from traditional to digital workflows.   They recognised AI not as a replacement for dental practitioners but as an essential tool that will significantly shape the future of dental education and practice.
