Two Aspects of Gavin Douglas

Abstract

Gavin Douglas was born to be conservative. Embedded in feudalism
and the pre Counter Reformation church he was not the kind of person to
cause a ripple in history. Literature gave him his fame. There single handed
with his translation of Vergil's Aeneid he brought Scotland into the
Renaissance. History robbed him of the influence he might have had. The
manuscripts of his Aeneid were put away and forgotten, and by the time they
were brought to light his language had become obsolete, so now a not
infrequent response to the mention of his name is 'Who's he?'.
