Marjory Kennedy Fraser was born in 1857, the fifth child in a family with a strongtradition of musical performance1. Her grandfather, David Kennedy, was a weaver,precentor2 in the Kirk at Perth and singing teacher. Her father, another DavidKennedy left a career as a businessman in Edinburgh to become a professionalsinger and singing teacher. His dream had been to sing the songs of Scotland to theScottish diaspora, already making its presence felt all over the world. Marjory'smother, David Kennedy's second wife, supported him in this decision.
