Focus and Scope

AJVS is a fully refereed journal of Victorian Studies published by the Australasian Victorian Studies Association (AVSA)

AJVS welcomes good, new, interesting work on any topic relating to Victorian Studies in the broadest sense.  That is, taking 'Victorian' loosely as a conceptual rather than historical term to include the long nineteenth century and virtually no geographical (or, indeed, cosmological) boundaries, but with a focus on English-language texts and sources, and with an address to readers that assumes a high level of familiarity with nineteenth-century studies in the Humanities. Areas of study include cultural history, print culture, visual and creative arts, architecture design and heritage, screen and theatre studies, economic, scientific, social and medical history, and more.

Victorian Studies is a broad church, and we assume a broad readership, with a variety of disciplinary, theoretical, methodological, geographical and thematic interests.  Papers that are very narrowly specialised within a particular sub-discipline or theoretical approach should probably go to more specialist journals.  We promote a high standard of scholarship and our pool of peer reviewers is international and multi-disciplinary in scope. Post-graduate students are welcome to submit once they have a contribution to make to work in their field, but should do so in consultation with their academic advisors, and be aware that their work will be blind-reviewed by assessors who will expect papers of a high standard of scholarship for an international journal in the field of Victorian Studies.

Previously available in print, the journal has been available online since November 2007. It is usually published twice a year.

Peer Review Process

Essay manuscripts should not exceed 7000 words (excluding endnotes and list of works cited), double-spaced in Times New Roman 12pt. font, with 1.5 line spacing and should conform to MLA style in regard to quotations, citations, endnotes, and lists of works cited. Manuscripts that do not comply with the Style Guide may be rejected by the editors. Authors are responsible for obtaining copyright permission for any illustrations or figures cited in their texts. Allow three months for consideration.

Manuscripts are refereed anonymously by two reviewers. Reviewers will assess the submission against the criteria of content (originality and thoroughness of research, and understanding of context), structure (well-structured argument and conclusion), and clarity of style.

Open Access Policy

AJVS provides open access to all of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Such access is associated with increased readership and citation levels. AJVS uses open source software, developed by the Public Knowledge Project <http://pkp.ubc.ca> to help make open access economically viable, and to improve the scholarly and public quality of research.

Copyright for all articles remains with the authors, but republication of articles in books or collections should include acknowledgement of first publication in AJVS.
