About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies (ANZJES) publishes original peer-reviewed research on contemporary European issues. It aims to facilitate scholarship on, and understanding of, contemporary Europe, connecting scholars across Australia, New Zealand and internationally. ANZJES is multidisciplinary, welcoming original articles and research notes on Europe and European issues from a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches within the social sciences, history, law, cultural studies and the humanities.

ANZJES is a scholarly, double-blind peer-refereed publication, which reflects the aims of its publishing organisation, the European Studies Association of Australia New Zealand (ESAANZ). 

The journal publishes original research articles, research notes and review essays (see Submissions for further information).

Open Access Policy

ANZJES is a fully open-access journal, providing immediate open access to its published content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Registration is not required to read or download an article.

ANZJES does not utilise Article Processing Charges (APCs) or other fees of any kind for publication.

Peer Review Process

All original research articles and notes published in this journal undergo a process of double-blind peer review. For review essays, single-blind peer review will be conducted in the first instance, with a second blind peer review conducted at request of the journal's editors.

Publication Frequency

ANZJES is published online three times per year.

Archiving

To guarantee long-term digital preservation, ANZJES is archived using the following services:

  • PKP Preservation Network (PKP-PN)
  • Trove/National Library of Australia

Self-Archiving

Authors may 'self-archive' their articles in digital form on their personal homepages, funder repositories or institutional archives operated by universities and non-profit research institutitions, provided that they link back to the original source on the JCER website. Authors may archive the submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript and/or published version of record. For the version of record, authors must clearly attribute ANZJES as the journal of original publication, and note the license under which the article was published.

Publisher

ANZJES is published by the European Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand (ESAANZ).

Journal History

ANZJES was launched in 2008 as a collaboration between the Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) and the European Union Studies Association of New Zealand (EUSANZ). CESAA and EUSANZ merged in 2020 to form the European Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand (ESAANZ), which continues as the journal's publisher.
