Abstract

Developing summary diagrams during lectures or tutorials helps explain processes and makes concepts visible. This technique is extremely important when teaching non-science major such as allied health students who often report feeling anxious about learning science. This poster presents a diagram explaining the control of blood pH that is developed stepwise during a tutorial to summarise the control of blood pH for first year Nursing students. It is then used by the students to predict the effect of changes of blood gas parameters during illness and recovery. Understanding the process of blood pH control and the pathology of pH disruptions is vital for nursing professionals. Making the processes and concepts clear in a summary diagram improve the performance of nursing graduates in the workplace.
