Keynote Address: A Haunted Country?
Abstract
Referring to writers such as Judith Wright and Bernard Smith, the address surveys the interaction of white people with indigenous Australia, particularly the attitudes of collectors of Aboriginal artefacts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Parts of it are drawn from the author's book Hunters and Collectors: The Antiquarian Imagination in Australia (Cambridge University Press, 1996).
