Most Australians have limited knowledge or appreciation of the European Union (EU), its structure and processes. The relationships between the 27 Member States and the EU institutions mean little, let alone the complex arrangements and checks and balances in place, on the one hand to promote European integration, and on the other, to protect and promote the rights and interests of the nations which form the membership of the EU.
