Author Guidelines

Instructions for Authors

The Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies publishes blind peer-reviewed research articles and research notes, and review essays.

Style Guidelines

All submitted articles should accord with the ANZJES style template, accessible here.

Authors should also ensure that they include an abstract of no more than 150 words at the beginning of the article, followed by at least four (4) key words arranged in alphabetical order.

Originality

Articles submitted to the Journal should not have been published elsewhere nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission of a paper also implies acceptance of the Copyright Notice below. It is understood that submission of the paper for publication has been approved by all of the authors.

Accuracy and Permissions

Manuscripts should be carefully checked by the author(s) for errors before they are submitted. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure the accuracy of quotations and references, and (where necessary) to gain permissions to cite another person’s work or to include any third party material in the article (including tables, figures or images).

Following peer review, and if accepted, final pre-publication proofs will be forwarded to the author(s) for verification and checking. Alterations and/or additions will not generally be accepted at this stage.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Articles

The journal welcomes original research articles focusing on contemporary post-War Europe and European affairs from a variety of disciplinary and multi-disciplinary perspectives within the social sciences, history, law, cultural studies and the humanities. Articles should be 4000–6000 words in length (inclusive of references, notes, tables and figures).

Research Notes

Research Notes are concise compositions of 2000–3000 words in length (inclusive of references, notes, tables and figures). They should address an important research problem or question within the focus of the journal, advancing an innovative theoretical or methodological approach, or a practitioner analysis of a contemporary policy issue or problem. Research Notes may also be used to share preliminary findings or an overview of data generated so far.

Review Essays

Review Essays may be a review of a single recently published book, of a number of recent contributions to a particular debate, or may be a broader ‘state-of-the-art’ survey of a contemporary theme or debate. State-of-the-art surveys should aim to outline for readers the significance of developments in the field of European studies of which they may no be aware. Review essays should typically address thematic areas covered by ANZJES.

Reviews Essays should be no more than:

  • 1000 words in length (inclusive of references, notes, tables and figures) for single or double book reviews;
  • 2000 words in length (inclusive of references, notes, tables and figures) for reviews of three or more recently published books on a particular topic;
  • 4000 words in length (inclusive of references, notes, tables and figures) for state-of-the-art surveys.
