This paper analyses Kosovo's path towards integration into the European Union. The study also examines the role of the European Union during the Kosovo War (1998-1999) and in the post-Kosovo War reconstruction process, as well as the negotiation process for normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. It is highlighted that the EU does not hold a united position in relation to Kosovo, since 22 countries have recognized Kosovo while five countries refuse to do so. This made Kosovo's relationship with the EU more complex, but also more interesting to study. The paper is based on the theory of functionalism, according to which the integration process of a country into the EU is based on the interdependence between the decision-making dynamics in the EU and the internal development trend of the country aspiring to EU membership.
