Call for Journal Abstracts

This call relates to a 2024 Special Issue of the International Education Journal: Comparative Perspectives (IEJ: CP), the official international, peer-reviewed journal of The Oceania Comparative and International Education Society (OCIES).

Participants of the OCIES 2023 conference are invited to submit an abstract for a solo or co-authored journal manuscript on the 2023 OCIES conference theme, “Quality Education for Sustainable Futures: Comparative Dialogues.”

Special Issue Editors: Dr Tavu’i Niusila Faamanatu-Eteuati (FOE-NUS), Dr Rasela Tufue-Dolgoy (FOE-NUS), Dr Tea Tepora Wright (USP IOE) & Dr Kabini Sanga (VUW).

Special Issue Administrators: Ms Pine Southon (VUW) & Daldrienne Taylor-Gafo (NUS).

At the 2023 OCIES conference, members and conference participants were encouraged to consider notions of quality and sustainability in relation to education at local, national, regional and global levels; and to investigate the power of dialogic engagement to enhance thought and action about educational quality and sustainability. This encouragement was embodied in the theme - “Quality Education for Sustainable Futures: Comparative Dialogues.”

Abstracts authors are invited to write to the conference theme, expanded as follows:

Quality education for a sustainable future is an important global goal due to rapid global educational, economic, social and cultural changes affecting all nations today. Education is a powerful avenue to overcome economic, political, social, cultural and educational hardship. We know that to be educated is to be empowered with the skills, knowledge and wisdom to make choices so that individuals, families, nations and the world can sustainably experience happiness and enrichment and develop solutions to today’s societal issues. How can collaboration and sharing knowledge for sustainable solutions help educators learn from each other, and work towards solutions to common problems?

In addition, writers might reference their abstract against one or more of the following specific areas of education from the conference:

  1. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Education
  2. Values and Relationality in Education
  3. Climate Change and Sustainable Development
  4. TVET and Youth Education
  5. Teachers’ Voices, Perspectives and Motivation

Whatever your schooling/institutional level of interest, disciplinary foci, research subject matter or educational ideals, the theme and specific areas provide opportunities to write proposals about past experiences, future focussed issues, performance, and insights, together with discussions of educational aims, methodologies for achieving progress, and imaginings for a flourishing future.

New and emerging writers, particularly those from Pacific Islands national and regional institutions, are encouraged to submit. There are opportunities to benefit from mentoring during the writing and publication processes, consistent with OCIES’ vision.

Proposed abstracts may be empirical or theoretical. Generally, the abstract criteria include the following: title; the research problem, need and significance are clear and justified; the research is grounded on an appropriate framework; the research questions are well-articulated and address issues, matters and relationships of importance to the theme; the research design is appropriate for answering the research questions; the study results, findings and outcomes are derived logically and supported; and the conclusions are well-supported by the study.

Ensure you include your full name[s], institution[s], and e-mail address[es]. Abstracts are to be written in a Word document and not be more than three hundred words in length. References are not required.

Editors will use relevant criteria for empirical and theoretical research to assess the abstract proposals.
