Abstract

The   published reports of academic conferences bear an uncertain relationship to   the events which they record. If the Conference goes well it is the   proceedings as such, the active face to face discussion and debate, which   matter for participants; the conference is remembered as a unity; the   individual papers seem secondary and are quickly forgotten.
