International students are encouraged to attend Brazilian Universities by the government’s internationalization policy which is centred on the enhancing the reputation of the country’s Higher Education Institutions. The benefits of studying in Portuguese, collaborating with Brazilian researchers, and developing intercultural skills are widely promoted. Though substantial levels of investment have been made over the last decade to ensure internationalization through mobility, there is limited understanding of international students’ experience, or any targeted programmes to ensure this aspect of internationalization is effective. Surveys are widely used to capture student experiences. The use of an adapted International Student survey captures the unique experiences of international students in Brazil, revealing the demographics and attraction to higher education institutions in the country. The findings from this novel evaluation also demonstrate the need to further understand the student experiences with a view to improving the quality of provision and consistency of support mechanisms.
