Abstract

In this 2-hour workshop we will focus on the importance of leadership in teaching. The workshop will consist of two Panel sessions including short presentations and interactive activities for all participants, plus a general Q&A session.

The first Panel session will explore institutional leadership opportunities in education. It will include an overview of leadership roles within academia (including academic departments, interdisciplinary collaborations and professional societies) and strategies for aspiring leaders to identify and pursue leadership opportunities in their relevant field of interest. Examples will be provided of successful leadership in driving educational initiatives.

The second Panel session will examine how we can implement effective leadership frameworks in an educational context. It will include an introduction to various leadership frameworks and a discussion on best practices for fostering a culture of leadership within academia. Case studies of successful implementation of leadership frameworks in education will be included together with opportunities for participants to role play different leadership frameworks in practice.

Brian Yates will facilitate the workshop drawing on his experience as a leader in education in chemistry and science more broadly. Two speakers with backgrounds in education leadership in science will be invited to lead the Panel sessions and provide personal examples and guidance from their careers.
