Abstract

In this workshop we will focus on the importance of leadership in university science education. The workshop will consist of some short presentations, an interactive activity for all participants, and a general Q&A session.

The workshop will explore how to identify and pursue leadership opportunities in education, and how to communicate the impact of our leadership activities and outcomes. It will include an overview of leadership roles within academia (including academic departments, interdisciplinary collaborations and professional societies) and strategies for aspiring leaders to identify and pursue leadership opportunities in their relevant field of interest.

An interactive session during the workshop will provide a structured approach for reflecting on experiences in our careers that could be framed as education leadership at different levels. Participants will share their practices and approaches for engaging with leadership and evidencing impact in education at different stages of their careers.

Brian Yates will facilitate the workshop drawing on his experience as a leader in education in chemistry and science more broadly. Several speakers with backgrounds in education leadership in science will lead the panel discussion and provide personal examples and guidance from their careers.
