Abstract

This paper addresses the representation of urban identities in Melbourne in Cassell's Picturesque Australasia, emphasising the dynamic relations in the text between the logic of the picturesque and the colonial city; between forms of identity both topographical and performative; between signification through words and through pictures; between the public and the private; and more generally, between the Chinatown of Little Bourke Street and the orderly avenues of 'Melbourne Proper'.
