Abstract

The paper explores the Australian version of an international trend in fiction towards the creation of novels that do not confine themselves to doubting the efficacy of their own discursive strategies, but extend those doubts to history and challenge 'the implied assumptions of historical statements, with reference to Peter Carey's Illywhacker , Oscar and Lucinda and Jack Maggs , Paul Carter's The Road to Botany Bay and Helen Darville's The Hand that Signed the Paper.
