Abstract

The paper argues that significant shifts in the way nature is represented as 'Other' or 'Not-Other' signal profound differences in identity formation, with particular reference to E. W. Landor's The Bushman; or Life in a New Country, Ethel Hassell's My Dusky Friends Seaforth Mackenzie's The Young Desire It, Peter Cowan's The Colour of the Sky, Kim Scott's True country and Tim Winton's Cloudstreet .
