Author Guidelines

Instructions for authors

This journal does not charge any type of article processing charge (APC) or any type of article submission charge. 

The Health Education in Practice: Journal of Research for Professional Learning is an open access publication, hosted by Sydney University Press and published by HETI, NSW Health. The journal accepts original articles, which have not been previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

Copyright is held by the authors with the first publication rights granted to the journal. Conditions of sharing are defined by the Creative Commons License Attribution-ShareAlike-NonCommercial 4.0 International

Submission Guidelines

Authors need to select one of the following:

  • Education-in-practice papers (editorial screening) - 500-2000 words in length excluding the reference list
  • Research and Evaluation articles (double blind peer review) – 4000-7000 words in length excluding the reference list

Articles to include

  • Abstract of up to 300 words in length and up to six key words
  • In-text references (Harvard style) and the reference list under the heading ‘References’ after the article.

Language – English in Australian, British or American spelling

Manuscript

  • The main text is typed with 1.5 spacing
  • The beginning of a paragraph is indicated by a space between paragraphs
  • Articles are to be submitted in Microsoft Word or RTF file format

Tables and figures

  • It is the responsibility of the author/s to obtain permission for the use of any illustrations, tables or artwork for which they do not hold copyright.
  • All tables and figures must be submitted as separate files. Their place in the manuscript must be indicated by using consecutive numbering and captions.

Complaints Procedure

Authors who wish to submit a complaint related to the peer review process or other editorial decisions should contact the Journal Manager at HEP@health.nsw.gov.au as a first point of contact. If issues cannot be resolved by either the Journal Manager or Editor, the issue may be escalated to the Editorial Advisory Board or to the Publisher by contacting Annette Solman, Chief Executive of HETI.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The main text is typed with 1.5 spacing; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); all tables and figures must be submitted as separate files. Their place in the manuscript must be indicated by using consecutive numbering and captions.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
